If you’re unable to trade a CS2 skin, the reason is usually shown in a Steam notification when you try to create a trade offer or use the Steam Community Market. The most common reasons are a recently activated Steam Guard, a new device, a password reset, a change to the mobile authenticator, a trade hold, or a trade lock placed on a specific item.
Not all restrictions block the same things. An account-level restriction can stop trading altogether, while a trade hold only delays the delivery of a trade that’s already been accepted. An item-specific cooldown, on the other hand, applies only to a particular skin. A Community Market restriction also doesn’t always mean that regular Steam trades are blocked.
So the first step is to carefully read the full notice shown by Steam and check the end time mentioned there. You shouldn’t try to bypass the restriction by using another browser, account, or skin service.Steam Support states that it cannot remove trade or Community Market restrictions on a case‑by‑case basis.
First check which action is blocked
Steam uses several similar-sounding terms. You’ll only find the right solution once you identify exactly what the restriction applies to.
Trade restriction prevents an account from creating or accepting Steam trades. The reason can be, for example, a short Steam Guard usage history, a recent password reset, or a trade ban on the account.
Community Market restriction prevents you from buying or selling items on Steam’s own marketplace. It can be related to your account’s purchase history, payment method, Steam Guard, or other account security factors.
Trade holdmeans that both parties have accepted the trade, but Steam keeps the items on hold before delivering them. According to Steam, a hold can last up to 15 days.
Market holdstarts when a sell listing has been created, but Steam has not yet published the item on the Community Market.
Item-specific trade lockapplies to a single skin. Your inventory usually shows the date after which the item can be traded or sold on the Market.
Trade Protection is a separate seven-day protection period for CS2 items after a trade has been accepted. The item is already in the recipient’s inventory, but during the protection period it cannot be transferred, used, or modified. Trade Protection is therefore not the same thing as a pre-delivery trade hold.
Steam Guard has not been enabled for 15 days
According to Steam’s current support guidelines, Steam Guard must be enabled for 15 days before an account can trade items and use the Community Market without restrictions related to this. This requirement applies whether you use Steam Guard via email or the mobile app.
If Steam Guard is completely disabled, you won’t be able to trade or use the Market. Disabling Steam Guard, as well as turning it off and then back on, will also restart the security waiting period.
Adding a mobile certificate doesn’t necessarily open up trading right away. If your account didn’t previously have Steam Guard enabled via email or the mobile app, this counts as a new Steam Guard activation and your account may be subject to a 15-day restriction.
Don’t remove and re-add Steam Guard just to see if the notification disappears. That can restart the waiting period. Instead, check in Steam when the protection was enabled and when the stated restriction will end.
Mobile certificate has been added or removed recently
The Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator lets you confirm logins, trades, and Market listings on your phone. Enabling the authenticator improves your account security, but it doesn’t immediately remove any existing restrictions.
According to Steam, during the first seven days after adding the mobile authenticator, trades you create can still be subject to a trade hold of up to 15 days. If the account was already protected with the email version of Steam Guard, adding the authenticator does not by itself block trading or using the Market entirely, but this hold rule can still apply to items you are sending.
Removing the mobile authenticator lowers your account’s security level. Steam will then block trading and the use of the Community Market for 15 days. The purpose is to give the rightful owner time to recover the account if someone else has removed the authenticator.
If you’re changing phones, use Steam Mobile’s built‑in authenticator transfer feature. Removing the authenticator before transferring can lead to a longer restriction than a controlled transfer. Always check the consequence shown in the app before confirming any changes.
A new computer or browser may look like a new device to Steam
If you log in from a device that hasn’t previously been authorized with Steam Guard, you may not be able to trade or use the Community Market on that device for seven days. Trading can still work on other devices that have been authorized for at least seven days.
Steam may interpret your environment as a new device even when you’re using the same computer. Possible reasons mentioned in the support article include:
clearing browser cookies
using a new browser
Reinstalling Steam
formatting a computer
According to Steam, the seven-day restriction for a new device does not apply if Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator has been active on the account for at least seven days. In that case, trades and Market listings are confirmed through the mobile app.
If your old authorized device is still safely available, check whether trading works on it. However, do not use an unknown, shared, or compromised device just to avoid the waiting period.
Password recovery and changing your password are two different things
Steam distinguishes between a normal password change and resetting a forgotten password. According to Steam’s restriction guidelines, changing your password in your account settings does not trigger the trading restriction described here.
If your password is reset using the Steam Support recovery process or through customer support, your account won’t be able to trade or use the Community Market for five days. If the account has been inactive for more than two months, the restriction after a password reset will last for 30 days.
The restriction is a deliberate security measure. If an email or Steam account is compromised, the waiting period gives the original owner a chance to notice what’s happened before any items are transferred.
If you didn’t reset the password yourself, treat the situation as a possible account takeover. Secure the email linked to your Steam account, change your passwords on a trusted device, review authorized devices, and, if needed, start the account recovery process only through official Steam Support.
Cancelling a trade that was on hold will trigger a cooldown
The purpose of a trade hold is to pause items before delivery so that any unauthorized trade can still be detected and canceled. If you cancel a trade that has already been accepted but is on hold, Steam will place a seven-day trading restriction on your account.
Steam interprets a cancellation as a sign that the account owner may have stopped a transfer started by a hijacker. The seven-day cooldown blocks new trade attempts while the security situation is being clarified. Steam Support will not remove this cooldown.
This should not be confused with the CS2 Trade Reverse feature. Trade Reverse rolls back recent trades covered by Trade Protection and applies a 30‑day trading and Market restriction to the account that initiated the rollback. Canceling a trade that is on hold, on the other hand, happens before the items are delivered and results in a seven‑day trading restriction.
Community Market requires a suitable purchase history
To use the Community Market, your account must have a successful Steam purchase that is more than seven days old but less than a year old. According to Steam, acceptable transactions include adding funds to your wallet and purchasing a game, DLC, or software on Steam.
Activating a retail product key or receiving a gift purchase does not meet this requirement. A payment chargeback will also reset the purchase history used for the requirement: in that case, only purchases made after the most recent chargeback are taken into account.
This condition applies to the Community Market. It doesn’t mean that every Steam trade is automatically blocked for the same reason. So check the notice to see whether it specifically mentions using the Market or all trading.
A new, unverified payment method may also be subject to a three-day waiting period before you can make Community Market purchases. According to Steam, confirming ownership of the credit card can make the payment method trusted. Item-specific cooldowns may still apply regardless of whether the payment method has been verified.
A limited Steam account doesn’t have access to all community features
Steam restricts some community features on accounts whose Steam Store spending hasn’t reached the value of five US dollars. The amount is converted from the account’s own currency into dollars using the exchange rate on the purchase date.
A limited account cannot, among other things, use the Community Market or trade Steam Community items such as trading cards, booster packs, and gems. To remove the restriction, you can, for example, add at least the required amount to your Steam Wallet, make purchases from the Steam Store, or redeem a Steam Wallet card.
However, according to Steam, playing a free-to-play game, activating a retail product key, using funds earned from items sold on the Market, or receiving a gift from another user will not remove the limited account status.
Note that the five-dollar requirement for a limited user account and the requirement for a Community Market purchase that is more than seven days but less than a year old are separate conditions. An account may meet one of them but not the other.
Trade ban, Community ban and VAC ban
An account can receive a temporary or permanent trade ban that blocks Steam trades. A community ban, on the other hand, can restrict access to the Community Market or other community features, depending on the scope of the limitation.
According to Steam’s current policy, a VAC ban, game cooldown, or Overwatch ban on your CS2 account will block you from using the CS2 market, trading CS2 items, and receiving item drops. Steam Support will not remove a VAC ban.
A ban is not the same thing as a regular temporary security restriction. If the message refers to a ban, check your account’s Steam Support page and the instructions regarding the ban. Do not pay anyone who promises to remove the ban, and do not transfer items to a so‑called inspection account.
A single CS2 skin can be locked
If only one or a few items are missing from the trade menu instead of your whole account, it may be a restriction on those specific items. An item bought on Steam or in the game may not be tradable or sellable on the Community Market until the date shown in your inventory.
Check the skin’s description in your Steam Inventory. Notes like “Tradable After” and “Marketable After” show when the item can be traded or listed. Tradeability and Market eligibility may become available at different times.
Trade Protection can also explain why a freshly received CS2 skin can’t be traded again right away. A Trade Protected item appears in your inventory immediately and can be used in-game, but it’s protected for seven days. During this protection period, the item can’t be traded further, consumed, or modified.
A third-party service cannot remove item-specific locks, holds, or account restrictions set by Steam. If you want to sell a CS2 skin, the transfer must first be allowed under Steam’s rules.
How to find out the reason for the restriction
Most issues can be resolved by systematically checking the details of your account, device, and item.
Read the full notice from Steam. Make a note of the exact name of the restriction and the end date shown by Steam. Do not post any screenshots that show account details or security codes.
Try to tell apart trading and the Market.Check whether the notification is blocking Steam trades, the Community Market, or both. Don’t make unnecessary purchases or transfers just to test it.
Check the status of Steam Guard.Make sure it has been continuously enabled for at least 15 days, and that the mobile authenticator has been active for at least seven days.
Think back to your most recent account changes.A new device, clearing your browser cookies, reinstalling Steam, resetting your password, or adding/removing a mobile authenticator can all explain the restriction.
Check the item’s own description. If other trading works, check the skin’s “Tradable After”, “Marketable After” or Trade Protection note.
Check your purchase history and whether your account is limited. The Community Market requires a valid purchase history, and a limited user account is missing some community features.
Wait until the time specified by Steam. You can’t speed up the security restriction with a skin service, a new Trade URL, or by contacting any unofficial “support”.
If the notification doesn’t match any situation described in Steam’s official instructions, or the end date has already passed, use Steam’s own guided support path. Do not send your password, Steam Guard code, recovery code, or SMS code to anyone.
Summary
CS2 skin trading can be blocked due to restrictions on your account, device, or a specific item. Common reasons include having Steam Guard enabled for less than 15 days, using the mobile authenticator for less than seven days, a new device, a password reset, removing the authenticator, an incomplete purchase history, or a visible cooldown on the item.
It’s important to distinguish between Trade hold, Trade Protection and trade restrictions. A hold delays the delivery of an item, Trade Protection limits the use of a received CS2 item for seven days, and an account-level trade restriction blocks trading more broadly.
Always check the reason and end date shown by Steam before making any changes. Don’t remove Steam Guard, switch browsers, or randomly renew your Trade URL, as these won’t lift the restriction and some changes can even trigger a new waiting period. Restrictions set in Steam are only removed once their conditions are met; no third party can bypass them.
