Steam Guard: what is it and how do you enable it?

Email or Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator?

The email version of Steam Guard sends a confirmation code to the email address linked to your Steam account whenever a login needs to be verified. Its security therefore also depends on how well your email account is protected. If you use the same weak password for both Steam and your email, an attacker could gain access to both.

The Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator works in the Steam Mobile app. Steam explains that the mobile authenticator uses a one-time code that changes every 30 seconds. The current Steam Mobile app also supports logging in with a QR code and approving login requests directly in the app.

The mobile authenticator is also used for Steam trade and Market confirmations. Whenever you confirm an action on your phone, always check:

• which account or device is asking you to log in
• which items are leaving your inventory
• who is the other party in the trade offer
• does the Market listing’s item and price match what you’re looking for

Don’t accept an unknown request just because the notification appears to come from the Steam app. Mobile authentication ensures that the approval is made on your phone, but the decision to accept the request is still up to you.

How to enable Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator

Have a phone ready for setup that you can install the official Steam Mobile app on, as well as a phone number that can receive text messages. First make sure the email address on your Steam account is correct and that you can sign in to your email account.

1. Install the official Steam Mobile app.Download the app from your phone’s official app store or follow the link on Steam’s own mobile page. Make sure the publisher is Valve Corporation and avoid unofficial installations offered through search engine ads.
2. Log in to the correct Steam account.Open the app and sign in to the account you want to secure. If you use multiple accounts, double-check the username carefully before you continue.
3. Open the Steam Guard view.In the app menu, find Steam Guard. If your account doesn’t yet have a mobile authenticator, the app will offer you the option to add one. The wording of the button may vary depending on the interface language.
4. Add and verify your phone number.Follow the instructions in the app and enter the verification code you received by text message. The SMS code is a one-time security credential and must not be shared with anyone.
5. Save the recovery code somewhere safe.Steam will show you a recovery code that you may need if your phone is lost or you can no longer access your mobile authenticator. Steam Mobile supports multiple accounts and multiple authenticators. This doesn’t change the basic rule: always make sure which account’s request you are approving.

Can you enable Steam Guard without a phone?

You can use Steam Guard email verification without a smartphone. In that case, the login code for an unrecognized device is sent to the email address linked to your Steam account. Steam also states that you can add a phone number to your account without a smartphone to help with account recovery and password changes.

Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator, on the other hand, requires the Steam Mobile app on a supported mobile device. On its mobile page, Steam currently lists the minimum requirements for the app as iOS 15.1 or Android 7.0. These requirements may change with app updates, so check the latest compatibility before installing.

Email verification is better than not using any extra confirmation at all. However, for active traders or Community Market users, the mobile authenticator provides the necessary phone confirmations and a smoother way to manage logins.

How does Steam Guard affect trading?

Steam uses your account’s security history as part of its trading and Community Market restrictions. According to the official Steam Support guidelines, Steam Guard must have been enabled for 15 days before an account can trade and use the Community Market without restrictions for this reason.

So adding a mobile authenticator doesn’t necessarily remove all restrictions right away. According to Steam’s mobile authenticator instructions, trades or Market listings created during the first seven days after adding the authenticator may be subject to a 15‑day hold. Your account may also have other restrictions that are not related to Steam Guard.

Changes made to the guarantee period can also have consequences:

• moving your mobile certificate to a new phone can trigger a two-day trading and Market restriction
• removing Mobile ID may result in a 15-day restriction
• Enabling Steam Guard does not remove item-specific trade locks or any other separate account restrictions.

The purpose of these restrictions is to give the account owner time to react if the account’s security settings are changed without permission. Steam Support states that it does not remove trade or Market restrictions on a case‑by‑case basis. Always check the exact notice shown on your account, as the reason and end time of the restriction may vary.

How to use Steam Guard safely

Steam Guard is only effective if the codes, recovery details, and approvals stay under your control.You must never give your Steam password, Steam Guard code, recovery code, or SMS verification code to anyone.A representative of Valve or Steam Support will never ask for them in a message, phone call, or chat.

Also make sure you’ve got these basics covered:

• use a unique, long password on Steam
• protect the email linked to your Steam account with a strong unique password and two-factor authentication
• download Steam Mobile only from the official source
• check from the address bar that the Steam login is happening on the official Steam domain
• never accept a QR login that you didn’t initiate yourself
• read every trade and Market confirmation carefully before accepting
• keep your phone’s operating system and the Steam app up to date

You never need to give your Steam Guard code to a skin buyer, seller, or the customer support of any third‑party service. For example, a Trade URL is not the same thing as a Steam Guard code: a trade link can be used to send an offer, but the security code is for the account owner only.

What to do if your phone is lost or you get a new one?

If you can still use your old phone, use Steam Mobile’s built‑in authenticator transfer feature when setting up your new phone. According to Steam’s instructions, the transfer may trigger a short trade restriction. Don’t remove the authenticator unnecessarily before the transfer, as doing so can cause a longer restriction.

If your old phone is no longer available, start the recovery process only through official Steam Support at help.steampowered.com. The recovery code and the phone number linked to your account can help restore control of the account. Do not give the recovery code to anyone who promises to recover the account on your behalf.

If you suspect that someone else has gained access to your account, first secure the email and device linked to your Steam account, change your Steam password on a trusted device, and review the devices authorized on your account. Use Steam’s official account recovery process if you’re unable to log in.

Most common Steam Guard issues

The verification code isn’t arriving in my email

Check your spam folder, the spelling of your email address, and that you’re looking at the right inbox. Wait a moment before requesting a new code. If the message still doesn’t arrive, use Steam Support’s instructions for logging in and recovering your account.

The mobile certificate code is not valid

The one-time code changes quickly, so always use the latest code shown in the app. Also make sure your phone’s date and time are set automatically. Do not try to solve the issue by sending the code to someone else.

Trade or Market listing is pending

Check the restriction message shown by Steam. The reason may be a short usage history of Steam Guard or the mobile authenticator, removal or transfer of the authenticator, a password change, a new device, or some other trading restriction. A third-party service cannot remove a restriction set by Steam.

An unknown login request appears on your phone

Decline the request. Change your Steam password and email password if you suspect your credentials have been compromised, and check your authorized devices. Do not accept the request just to test it.
