Steam price vs. cash value: why are they different?

P2P comes from the words peer to peer, meaning from user to user. On a P2P marketplace, the service connects the skin seller and the buyer, but typically does not buy the skin itself into its own inventory.

The seller lists the skin at a price of their choice and waits for another user to buy it. In a true P2P model, the skin usually stays in the seller’s own Steam inventory during this waiting period. Once a buyer is found, the seller delivers the skin to the buyer via a Steam trade, following the marketplace’s instructions and deadline.

However, not all third-party marketplaces work the same way. On some platforms, the skin is first transferred to the service’s bot inventory or held in an escrow-style storage. In that case, the seller doesn’t necessarily need to be online when the trade is completed, but the skin is removed from their own inventory even before a final buyer is found.

In both models, the key point is the same: the listing has not yet turned into a cash sale. The seller only gets the money once another user buys the skin and the service’s payment and withdrawal conditions are met.

The advantage of marketplace selling is that you can aim for a higher price than an instant sell offer. The seller can usually set the listing price themselves, and the service doesn’t need to buy the skin into its own inventory before the final demand has been confirmed.

However, a higher listing price does not guarantee that the item will actually sell. The sale may happen quickly, after several days or weeks, or not at all. The timing depends on factors such as:

• skin demand and trading volume
• listing price compared to other sellers
• skin wear rating, float, and pattern
• marketplace user base and payment methods
• market price changes during the waiting period

A fast-moving, competitively priced skin can sell quickly. For a rare skin or one priced too high, you may have to wait a long time for a buyer. If the market price drops while you’re waiting, you may need to lower your asking price.

With P2P sales, there are also some practical responsibilities. The seller must keep an eye on notifications, verify the correct trade offer, and confirm delivery within the platform’s deadline. Depending on the marketplace’s terms, a late or incorrect delivery can lead to the trade being cancelled or other consequences. A marketplace based on a bot inventory automates delivery more, but in return the skin is no longer available for the seller to use during the waiting period.

P2P sales compare the net amount

When choosing a P2P page, the listed price or advertised selling fee alone isn’t enough for comparison. As a seller, you should calculate how much money actually ends up in your account after all fees.

Possible costs or limitations include:

• marketplace sales fee
• fee charged for withdrawing money
• processing fee depending on the payment method
• currency exchange cost
• a possible minimum withdrawal or fixed minimum fee
• the price reduction needed to find a buyer

If a skin is listed for 100 euros, for example, and the service charges a 5 percent commission on the completed sale, you are left with 95 euros before any possible withdrawal fees. If there is an additional fee for cashing out, the amount that arrives in your bank account will be lower than this. This example is only meant to illustrate how the calculation works and does not reflect the current pricing of any specific service.

So the actual cash value is not the highest visible listing. A better point of comparison is the realistic final selling price, minus all fees related to selling and withdrawing the money.

Instant sell: the service acts as the buyer

With the Instant sell service, your skin isn’t listed while waiting for another user. The service shows you a buy offer for the skin and purchases it from you immediately after you accept. As the seller, you don’t need to think about a listing price, compete with other listings, or wait for a buyer to show up.

The purpose of this model is to make selling skins as fast and effortless as possible. The user sees the offer in advance, selects the skins to sell, and confirms the trade. The service then takes care of reselling the skin later, handling any price changes, and finding the final buyer.

The Instant sell offer may therefore be lower than the possible selling price on the P2P market. The difference is the trade-off for speed and certainty: when using it, the seller knows the price at the moment of the deal and doesn’t have to wait to see if a listing will sell.

Offers can vary between instant sell services. Each service may have different demand, stock levels, pricing models, and risk assessments. When comparing them, you should look not only at the offer itself, but also at all fees that will be deducted and at when the payment is promised to be sent.

On Skinsauna, trades don’t wait around for an external buyer

Skinsauna.gg is a Finnish instant-sell service. Users receive an offer for their skins without creating their own listings, then simply choose which skins to sell and the payout method that suits them best. There’s no need to look for or wait for a buyer, because Skinsauna itself purchases all approved skins.

Skinsauna offers two payment options that are relevant to this article.

Standard payment after seven days

With the standard payout, the sale is agreed at the time of listing and the money is paid seven days later. The payout time is tied to the seven-day Trade Protection period used on Steam. During this protection period, a received CS2 item can be used in-game, but it cannot be transferred further or modified. A protected trade can also be reversed within the time frame defined by Steam.

A seven-day payment period doesn’t mean that Skinsauna is looking for a buyer for your skin. The offer and the deal have already been agreed before the wait. It’s about waiting for the payment, not like on a P2P marketplace where you’d be waiting for a buyer.

With the normal payment option, the amount paid to your bank account is higher than with the advance payment, because the payment is made only after seven days. A bank transfer fee is charged for this payment. The applicable fee and the final amount that will remain in your account are clearly shown in the trade summary before you confirm it.

Advance payment straight to your bank account

With advance payment, the money is sent to your bank account immediately instead of the seller having to wait seven days for the payment period to end. Skinsauna pays out the amount before the Trade Protection period expires and assumes the risk for this time.

The amount paid to your bank account with advance payment is slightly lower than with normal payment, because Skinsauna sends the money before the Trade Protection period ends. Any fees related to the payment are deducted from the offer. You can clearly see these fees and the final amount that will be paid to your bank account in the trade summary before you confirm it.

You make the choice before confirming the trade, so you can see the offer, fees, and final amount to be paid all at once. Bank processing times and other external factors mentioned in the terms of use may affect the exact time the payment arrives.

Steam Market, P2P or instant sell?

The best way to sell depends on what form you want the value in and how much time and effort you’re willing to put into selling.

Steam Market:The skin is waiting for a buyer, and the sale will give you Steam Wallet balance. This balance can’t be withdrawn to a bank account.

P2P marketplace: A buyer is being sought for the skin. It can either stay in the seller’s inventory or be moved to the service’s bot storage, depending on the marketplace model. The seller can aim for a higher cash price, but the timing of the sale is unknown in advance. There may be separate fees for selling and withdrawing funds.

Instant sell service:The service buys your skin directly. You don’t need to wait for an external buyer or for a listing to sell, and you see the offer before confirming. The speed, convenience, and the fact that the service takes on the reselling risk all affect the offer you receive.

If your goal is to buy games or new skins on Steam, the Steam Market can be a natural choice. If you’re aiming for a higher cash price and are willing to wait for a buyer, a marketplace may suit you better. Instant sell is the most straightforward option when your priority is to skip the wait for a buyer and see the offer in advance.

For example, a Steam price of 100 euros does not mean 100 euros to your bank account. On a marketplace, the final amount is only clear once a buyer is found and all fees have been deducted. In Instant Sell, the comparison figure is the amount that ends up in your account after the offer and the visible fees. That’s why you can’t just subtract a single universal percentage from the Steam price to determine a skin’s cash value.

Always compare how much you actually receive

The Steam price alone doesn’t reflect the real cash value of a CS2 skin when selling, because Steam Wallet funds can’t be withdrawn to your bank account. A P2P listing also isn’t a completed trade yet, and various selling and withdrawal fees will be deducted from the listed price.

That’s why it’s worth comparing selling methods using five questions:

1. How much money will be left in the account after all expenses?
2. Do you have to wait for a buyer for your skin?
3. Does the skin stay in my own inventory while I’m waiting?
4. Does the seller have to track and confirm delivery within a set time?
5. When will the money be available in my bank account?

The highest visible price isn’t automatically the best outcome. What really matters is how much money actually ends up in your account, how long you have to wait, and how much effort and uncertainty the trade involves.
