CS2’s Trade Protection is a Steam security feature that lets you restore recent Counter-Strike 2 item trades if you lose access to your account, for example due to phishing or malware.The CS2 items you receive in a trade are transferred to the new owner immediately, but they remain protected for the next seven days.

What is CS2 Trade Protection?
Trade Protection on Steam is a system that gives users time to react to unauthorized item transfers. Valve introduced this feature in Counter-Strike 2 in July 2025. According to Steam’s current support documentation, CS2 is currently the only game whose items use this protection.
All CS2 items received in a trade are protected for seven days from the moment the trade is confirmed. Steam marks these items in your inventory and in the trading interface with a yellow shield. This icon shows both the protection period and the fact that the item cannot yet be transferred in a new trade.
Trade Protection changes the traditional idea that a completed Steam trade is always immediately final. For seven days, any trade containing protected CS2 items is covered by the trade reversal system. When this period ends, the protection expires and that trade can no longer be reversed using the Trade Reverse feature.
You can’t disable protection on your own CS2 items. You also can’t bypass it by trading in some other way. When the game applies Trade Protection, the items covered by it will remain protected for the full seven-day period.
What can you do with a trade-locked CS2 item?
A Trade Protected item appears in the recipient’s Steam Inventory immediately after the trade is accepted. This does not mean the item has to wait seven days before transferring. The recipient can equip the skin and use it in Counter-Strike 2 during the protection period.
However, within seven days you cannot:
transfer to another Steam account
move to Storage Unit
spend
edit
The purpose of these restrictions is to keep the item in a state where Steam can restore the trade chain if needed. If a protected item could be moved through multiple accounts right away or used for some other action, restoring the original ownership would be much more difficult.
Steam also doesn’t allow Trade Protected items and unprotected in-game items to be included in the same trade. All items in a trade must have the same protection level. In practice, this means you can’t trade CS2 items in the same offer with items from a game that doesn’t use Trade Protection.
Trade Protection and trade hold are not the same thing
Trade Protection is easily confused with trade hold, meaning the trade holding period, even though they are different features.
With Trade Protection, the trade is completed and the item is immediately transferred to the recipient’s inventory.The item can be used in the game, but it comes with a seven-day protection period and the option to reverse protected trades.
In trade holdSteam, on the other hand, withholds the item before delivering it. According to Steam, this can happen if the trade is not confirmed with the mobile app and the account’s security does not meet the requirements related to the mobile authenticator. The hold can last for up to 15 days.
If a trade hold applies to CS2 items, they remain in Steam’s custody for the duration of the hold. According to Steam’s Trade Protected Items guidelines, once the hold period ends, the items can be used, modified, or transferred immediately. The seven-day Trade Protection period and the trade hold of up to 15 days should therefore not automatically be treated as consecutive waiting periods.
When should you use the Trade Reverse feature?
Trade Reverse is an emergency feature for situations where CS2 items have been transferred from a Steam account without the real owner’s consent. A typical cause can be an account takeover, phishing, malware, or any other situation where a third party has gained control of the account.
This feature is not intended for canceling a trade due to price changes, buyer’s or seller’s remorse, or a deal that later turns out to be unfavorable.A reversal affects all protected trades from the last seven days and will place a long-term usage restriction on the account that initiated the reversal.
Before you start the recovery process, make sure you have full control of your Steam account again. If you can’t log in or suspect that someone else might still have access, begin account recovery through Steam Support. Otherwise, the attacker may still be able to access your account even after the recovery.
When securing your account, it makes sense to:
change your Steam account password on Steam’s official support page
also change the password of the email linked to the account if you suspect it may not be secure
check Steam Guard and the devices authorized for the account
remove unknown logins and other suspicious access rights
scan your device for malware
Do not trust anyone who contacts you on Steam Chat, Discord, or elsewhere claiming to be from Steam Support and asking you to transfer items for inspection. All Steam Support matters are handled only through Steam’s official help.steampowered.com website.
How protected CS2 trades are reversed
You can start restoring trades yourself from Steam’s Trade History page. You don’t need a separate Steam Support ticket as long as you control the account and the trades eligible for restoration appear in your history.
First make sure that your Steam account and the email linked to it are under your control.
Only sign in to Steam using the official Steam app or Steam’s own website.
Open the Trade History of your Steam account.
View trades that included protected CS2 items. Trades eligible for a refund are marked with the Trade Protection label.
Start a trade reversal, i.e. restoring trades, using the Trade History page feature.
Carefully read the summary shown by Steam. The confirmation applies to all protected trades from the last seven days and will trigger a 30-day trade and market restriction on the account that initiates the restoration.
Confirm the reset only if this is a genuine account security issue and you understand the consequences.
If a trade is not marked with the yellow Trade Protection badge, or its seven-day protection period has already expired, it cannot be reversed using this feature. According to Steam Support, trades made before this feature was introduced also cannot be changed or reverted through the system.
What happens when a Trade Reverse is done?
Trade Reverse restores all trades from the last seven days that contained protected items. All items moved in those trades are returned to their previous owners.
This means the impact can extend to multiple trades and multiple counterparties. The rollback cannot be limited to a single skin, a single trade offer, or just the suspicious recipient. If you’ve also made fully intentional protected CS2 trades within the same seven-day period, those will be reversed as well.
Three additional things will also happen to the account that initiated the refund:
the account cannot trade items for 30 days
the account cannot use the Steam Community Market for 30 days
open trade offers will be canceled and items listed on the Market will be returned to your account
Steam Support does not remove the 30-day restriction related to the Trade Reverse feature on a case-by-case basis.You should therefore only make your decision after carefully reviewing the confirmation screen in Steam.
Will my trade partner receive a 30-day trade ban?
No, you can’t. According to Steam, the 30-day trade and Community Market cooldown only applies to the account that initiates the trade reversal. Your trade partner’s account will not receive the same restriction because of this.
The other party’s inventory will still change, because items from refunded trades are returned to their previous owners. For example, if you received a skin in a trade and the other party later refunded their protected trades, the skin you received will be removed from your account and the items you originally gave in the trade will be returned to you.
This is an important difference between an account restriction and an item reversal. The other party loses the items they received in the reversed trade, but they do not get a 30-day trading ban just because the other party used the Trade Reverse feature.
What does Trade Protection mean for a skin buyer or seller?
Trade Protection shields the Steam account owner from item losses after an account hijack, but at the same time it makes the first seven days of ownership refundable. During that period, a received CS2 skin cannot be traded further, and the original trade partner can trigger a rollback of all their protected trades.
Third-party skin services have their own payout, delivery, and risk policies that are separate from Steam’s Trade Protection rules. Steam decides when an item is protected and when a trade can be reversed. Each service, in turn, defines in its own terms when a trade or payment is considered final. Steam’s seven-day protection period alone does not indicate when a particular service will pay the seller.
Before trading, the user should at least check whether the item shows a yellow protection shield, when that protection ends, and what the service’s own terms say about reversed trades. No third‑party service can remove the Trade Protection period or the 30‑day cooldown set by Steam.
Trade Protection doesn’t replace careful checking
The option to reverse protected trades doesn’t make careless trading risk-free. The protection window lasts only seven days, and this feature won’t help if the eligible refund period has already expired. In addition, the reversal of all protected trades and the 30-day usage restriction are significant consequences.
Always check the other party in a trade offer and every single item involved before you confirm it. Don’t let yourself be rushed by pressure from the other side. Also, never send skins to so‑called inspection or verification accounts: Steam or Valve will never ask users to send items for account review.
Never share your Steam password, Steam Guard code, recovery code, or any SMS verification code with anyone. Before logging in, always check that the browser’s address bar shows an official Steam address. Trade Protection is your last safety net, but keeping your account secure in advance is still the best solution.
