CS2 Doppler: Phases 1–4 and gemstones

Phase and pattern seed are not the same thing. Phase determines the color palette that’s used, while the seed affects how the pattern is positioned on the knife’s surface. That’s why two items with the same phase can look different: on one, the desired color dominates the play side, while on the other it ends up on the back side or between darker areas.

Doppler Phase 1

Phase 1 blends dark areas with pink, red, and purple. The overall look is usually dark, but the brighter streaks stand out against a black or deep blue‑violet base. Under CS2 lighting, some of the red sections can appear as a strong magenta.

Phase 1 usually stands out with red or pink contrast, while Black Pearl creates a darker, more pearlescent overall look. The pattern affects how much dark and bright surface is visible on the play side.

Doppler Phase 2

Phase 2 is best known for its pink and magenta tones. It usually has less dominant dark surface than Phase 1, which makes the knife look bright and almost uniformly pink. Purple and bluish hues complement the color scheme depending on the pattern and lighting.

Especially pink specimens are sometimes described as max pink. That’s an informal way to talk about the color distribution, not its own variant. You can recognize Phase 2 by the pink tone dominating the entire blade, not just a single reddish spot.

Doppler Phase 3

Phase 3 is typically a dark mix of blue, teal, black, and some greenish tones. Depending on the lighting, it can look grey, turquoise, or deep blue. Because of the lighting, Phase 3 is easy to misjudge if you only see it in a single picture.

Phase 3 is usually distinguished from Phase 4 by a greener or more turquoise tint and an overall darker look. Phase 4 leans more towards a bright blue. Sapphire, on the other hand, typically appears cleaner and more uniformly blue than either of the regular phases.

Doppler Phase 4

Phase 4 is the most blue-dominant of the common phases. It’s characterized by bright blue areas broken up by dark streaks and shades of black or deep violet. A skin with a lot of blue can, at first glance, look like a Sapphire.

The blue-leaning Phase 4 is sometimes called max blue, but that’s just an informal market term. Sapphire is usually recognized by its cleaner, more gemstone-like blue, while the Phase 4 blade shows more dark patterning.

Doppler Ruby

Ruby is the red gemstone variant. Its color ranges from bright ruby red to deep red and in places magenta, but overall it looks clearly redder and more uniform than in Phase 1 or Phase 2.

Ruby appears as a solid red on both sides of the blade. Phase 2 can still look very reddish under certain lighting conditions. Ruby is its own variant, so for price comparison you should look at Ruby versions of the same knife model rather than regular Doppler phases.

Doppler Sapphire

Sapphire is a blue gemstone variant. Its surface usually appears deep blue, bright sapphire-like, and more uniform than Phase 4. Light can bring out a violet or lighter blue sheen on the surface without changing the variant itself.

Sapphire is most often confused with the blue-leaning Phase 4. The dark streaks on Phase 4 and the greenish tint on Phase 3 help tell them apart, but the variant is confirmed via inspect data.

Doppler Black Pearl

Black Pearl is the darkest and visually the hardest-to-identify gemstone variant in the Doppler family. In addition to black and deep purple, its surface can show pearlescent blue, reddish, or greenish hues. The colors can shift dramatically depending on the light and viewing angle.

Despite its name, Black Pearl isn’t necessarily a flat, solid black. Its defining feature is more of a dark, iridescent overall look. Phase 1 can resemble it because of its red‑purple areas, and Phase 3 because of its blue‑green tones. If the image is dark, both can appear misleadingly close to Black Pearl.

A dark Phase 1 or Phase 3 can look similar to Black Pearl. The term fake Black Pearl only refers to a regular phase that looks the same, not to a genuine Black Pearl variant.

Quick comparison of Doppler phases

Phase 1: a dark base with pink, red, and purple streaks.

Phase 2: a regular phase dominated by pink and magenta.

Phase 3: dark blue, blue-green, and in places a greenish coloration.

Phase 4: a standard phase dominated by bright blue with some darker areas.

Ruby: a seamless impression of red gemstone brilliance.

Sapphire: a uniform deep blue gemstone-like appearance.

Black Pearl: a dark, purple, color-shifting pearlescent effect that changes hue depending on the angle.

The comparison is only indicative. Check the knife under the same lighting from both sides and compare it to verified examples of the same model.

How to check the phase of your own Doppler knife

1. Make sure you’re looking at the exact item. Check the knife model, Doppler finish, wear rating, and any StatTrak marking. Don’t compare different knife models directly with each other.
2. Open the inspect view. Look at the blade from both sides and rotate it at different angles so that a momentary reflection doesn’t determine the identification.
3. Check the phase on CSFloat. Search for the knife in the CSFloat Database or inspect it using the CSFloat tool. The service shows details like the paint index, float, and pattern seed. Make sure you’re using the correct CSFloat address and never enter your Steam credentials on an unfamiliar site.
4. Alternatively, use Steam Inventory Helper. This browser extension shows the Doppler phase on the Steam Market and in your inventory. Just install it from your browser’s official add-on store and review the requested permissions before installing. Because it requires broad permissions, the extension isn’t essential if CSFloat and the inspect link are enough for your needs.
5. Check the pattern and float separately. Phase indicates the color variant, pattern shows the placement of the design, and float the wear value. None of this information replaces the other two.
6. Compare it to the same knife model. Look for verified photos or listings of the same phase and pay special attention to the in‑game color distribution.
7. Base your pricing on completed comparison trades. An active listing is just the seller’s asking price, not proof of fair market value. Limit your comparisons to the same model, phase, condition, and as similar a pattern as possible. For expensive gemstone variants, ask for a second opinion if needed.

How do pattern, float, and knife type affect the value?

The Doppler phase is a key price factor, but it doesn’t determine the value on its own. When comparing, you should at least take into account the knife model, variant, the visible color distribution of the pattern, float, and the current market demand.

The knife model determines how much of the pattern is visible. For example, on an M9 Bayonet with its wide blade, the color distribution stands out clearly. Differences between the play side and back side can affect how desirable the skin is, so a sales image showing only one side isn’t enough to judge it properly.

Float shows the wear level. Doppler knives usually come in very clean condition grades, but a lower number doesn’t automatically mean a proportionally higher price for every item. Check whether the float actually affects how it looks, and whether there are completed trades for similarly low values.

The use of the terms max pink and max blue isn’t completely consistent. Instead, evaluate the visible color distribution and look at completed sales of similar knives.

Most common mistakes when evaluating a Doppler

• Phase 4 is assumed to be Sapphire purely based on the strong blue color.
• Phase 1 or Phase 3 is assumed to be Black Pearl based on the dark screenshot.
• Phase 2 is assumed to be Ruby because of its intensely saturated red appearance.
• The colors or prices of different knife models are compared directly with each other.
• The max pink or max blue name used by the community is treated as the official variant.
• The price is estimated from the general listings of all Dopplers without checking the phase.
• An active asking price is treated as the realized market price.
• The inspect link is opened on a suspicious site or Steam login details are given to an unknown service.

The most expensive mistake is selling a gemstone variant for the price of a regular phase. The opposite risk is paying a gemstone premium for a knife that is actually just an unusually colored Phase 1–4.

Summary

In the regular CS2 Doppler family, there are Phases 1–4 as well as Ruby, Sapphire, and Black Pearl.

Confirm the phase with CSFloat or Steam Inventory Helper, check the blade from both sides, and when comparing prices use only completed sales of the same knife model and the same variant. This way a regular phase won’t get mixed up with a gemstone variant.
